German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.

If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.

About Poppy

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Adoption Fee: $275
  • Species: Dog
  • Current Age: 9 Years 6 Months (best estimate)

Poppy is a sweet, gentle, approximately 2.5 year old girl who lived as a stray on a reservation until rescue.

Poppy is an incredibly smart, happy, loving, and affectionate girl! She is the type of dog that would blend into her new family with ease once she knows her new boundaries. She loves routine but also loves surprise car rides and going out shopping with her foster parents. She is very gentle when receiving treats and loves everyone she meets. She is crate trained, house trained, and knows basic commands (off, sit, “go lay down”). She does walk well on a leash but is working on her excitement when she sees other dogs. She gets along well with the two resident dogs in her foster home and does excellent with the cats.

Poppy is a very lovable and loyal companion. She would be an excellent dog for any active household with a 6 ft fence. She will make an outstanding family pet for a very lucky family. She will need her forever family to continue working on her leash manners and on not jumping up.
