Ronan. New name: Riley needs a caretaker or foster! Won't you consider helping him get a new start?

German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.

If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.

About Ronan. New name: Riley

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Adoption Fee: $350
  • Species: Dog
  • Current Age: 9 Years 7 Months (best estimate)

Ronan is an adorable 2.5 y.o. boy who came into rescue with an eye infection, and severe allergies that had caused hair loss and sores on his face, belly, and legs. Thanks to good care, including good vetting, nutrition, and hygiene, the sores are now gone, his gorgeous fluffy coat is coming back, and he is doing very well!

Ronan is very friendly, happy, affectionate, and a super fun, adorably goofy boy. He is very smart and eager to please. Ronan is potty-trained, crate-trained, loves walks, car rides, and he is a wonderful sidekick who is enthusiastic, but gentle and never overbearing.

Ronan is such lover! He loves to be around the humans in the house and enjoys spending time with the other household dog. When Ronan isn't giving lots of kisses he loves to lay with his blankies and toss around his ball. He loves to play fetch, but he also knows how to entertain himself.  He has become an amazing walker, usually maintaining a loose leash throughout the whole walk. He is such a sweetheart and just wants to share his love with everyone!!

Ronan is adorable as he discovers or learns something new every day. He approaches life with hopeful enthusiasm and wonder. He is such a funny, lovable, gentle boy. Knowing him is loving him! Ronan will make a fabulous family pet for a very lucky family. He truly has a wonderfully sweet, friendly temperament; and a nice energy level that makes him a great, pleasant companion.

Ronan is the whole package! He is sweet, friendly, playful, and lovable. He has plenty of energy for walks, but he also knows how to entertain himself with his toys and chewies. He loves running around the backyard and playing with his humans, and other dogs, but he also settles down very nicely in the house. He behaves very well in public and he is truly a delightful companion.

It's very important for GSDs to be on a high-quality diet, as they are prone to GI upsets, allergies, and sensitivities. But this is especially important for Ronan, who prior to coming into rescue, struggled for years with allergies, after trying different meds and treatments without any lasting success. Ronan is finally thriving thanks to having a healthy, high-quality nutritious diet, and good vet care. This has really helped Ronan thrive, and we'd like for him to continue on a similar diet, and to continue to be followed up for his allergies as needed.

Reminder: Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, please remember that, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings, in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills.
