German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.

If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.

About Nathan *Puppy*

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Adoption Fee: $450
  • Species: Dog
  • Current Age: 8 Years 9 Months (best estimate)

Nathan is a very sweet, friendly and affectionate, approx 6 month-old pup, whom we rescued from a reservation in SD. Reservation dogs lead a very hard life, with no shelter, little food, and no vet care. Nathan arrived in extremely bad condition. He had been suffering in the heat with no food or water on the reservation. He was very emaciated, down to skin and bones, and suffering from extreme hair loss, scabs, and itching terribly due to a severe case of Sarcoptic Mange. Nathan has been treated and is fully recovered. He glows with good health and happiness and he is ready for his furever home.

Nathan is a fantastic, extremely sweet and friendly pup. When he arrived, he was half-starved to death, and although sweet he was little tentative, like had not always been treated kindly. Nathan has filled out nicely, is growing like a weed, and he has become a super sweet, friendly, confident, playful, and happy-go-lucky pup.

Nathan loves to play with other dogs, loves people, running in the backyard, playing with balls, chewing on Nylabones, and he absolutely adores food and treats! He is a very sweet, hilarious, energetic, and enthusiastic boy. Yet, he is also an adorable cuddle bug who gives the most gentle puppy kisses and chin nibbles. He has good manners, he is super smart, and he is very loving and eager to learn and please. Nathan enjoys walks, car rides, sitting at outdoor patios, and basically going anywhere and everywhere with his humans. If petting and treats are involved, all the better! Nathan is good with other dogs and kitties too.

Nathan is a fantastic, very sweet and sensitive boy who is clearly loving his new life as a cherished indoor pet, and he shows his appreciation and love every day. He is potty-trained and a delight to have around. He has a wonderfully gentle and mellow temperament. Nathan will make a very loyal, sweet and fun companion for a very lucky adopter!

Like all German Shepherd and German Shepherd mix puppies, Nathan will need a lot of activity, socialization, boundaries, consistency and leadership in order to become a well-balanced, well-behaved dog.

Please review the information in the "About Us", "Important Considerations" and "Adopt" sections on our website menu, as it contains useful information about the breed, adoption fees, the adoption process and our requirements, and how meeting the dogs works.
