German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.

If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.

About Aldo *Miracle Dog*

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Adoption Fee: $350
  • Species: Dog
  • Current Age: 13 Years 3 Months (best estimate)

Aldo Zom Waldenhauf is a very handsome, regal 5 y.o. boy whom we were able to rescue from a high-kill shelter in California, thanks to the amazing Miracle GSD Network.

Aldo is a very sweet boy. He came to us skin and bones, with very severe ear infections that took a couple of months to treat. He still has at least one more follow up visit in 2 weeks to try to determine if the remaining "gunk" at the bottom of his canal can be scraped off if still there, or if it might be some sort of growth. But he appears to be doing great, no longer has drainage or any apparent discomfort. It is possible that the ear infections might have damaged his hearing a little: he seems to be just a bit hard of hearing. He is very alert though, eager to please, and he watches you for queues. He is gentle, great with kids, and does well with other dogs. Aldo loves playing with balls, chew toys, and stuffed animals. He loves to cuddle. He walks great on a leash and he is always happy to go on outings. He is treat-motivated, kennel-trained and house-broken. Aldo is working on not stalking the kitties in his foster home and he has already shown some improvement :). Aldo has a playful side, but he is delightfully laid-back most of the time.

Aldo is an amazing boy who will make a a fabulous, loyal companion for a very lucky adopter.

More about Aldo *Miracle Dog*

Good with Dogs, Not Good with Cats, Good with Kids

Special Needs: Ears flushes & eardrops daily until next vet visit 1-13-17, which he tolerates very well at home. Aldo becomes very nervous at the vet and needs to be muzzled so that the vet can look inside his ears. He is otherwise very sweet, gentle, and laid-back the rest of the time (at home and when out and about).

Please review the information in the "About Us", "Important Considerations" and "Adopt" sections on our website menu, as it contains useful information about the breed, adoption fees, the adoption process and our requirements, and how meeting the dogs works.
