German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.
If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.
About Nora *Pre-Teen*. New name: Nala
Status: Adopted!
Adoption Fee: $350
Species: Dog
Current Age: 8 Years 5 Months (best estimate)
Nora is a very pretty girl who lived as a stray on a Reservation prior to rescue. Like many of the reservation puppies that we rescue, Nora arrived sick with parasites and required antibiotics and supportive care to get better. She is all well now, has been thriving in her foster home and is ready for her forever home!
Nora is about 6 months old, loves to run and is very playful! Her favorite toys are a soft stuffed moon and a rope ball that she will fetch. Despite her smaller size, she is high-energy and she will need a very active family with plenty of time to exercise and train her. Nora is a quick-learner and can already sit, shake and is working on stay. She is a perfect angel when waiting for her food ;) . She is very treat-motivated and will just about anything for her pink stuffed Kong!
Nora is still a puppy and is working on potty-training, not jumping up, and not jumping on the furniture. She is great in her kennel as long as she has something to chew on. She will stay about 6-7 hours in her kennel through the night without a peep. She likes to lay in your lap and chew on her toys. While Nora is not a cuddler, she is sweet and affectionate. She loves to be outside and roll around on the grass or run!
Nora is a gorgeous, super fun, extremely active, little firecracker! She is smart, determined, and is full of personality. Nora would do best in a very active household that will provide plenty of mental and physical stimulation. Nora will need lots of exercise, socialization, boundaries, and leadership. For that reason, we are looking for someone with some experience with German Shepherds, Australian Cattle Dogs, Border Collies, or similar working breeds.
Like all German Shepherd and German Shepherd mix puppies, Nora will need lots of training, consistency, boundaries, and lots of activity and socialization, in order to become a well-balanced, well-behaved dog.
