German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.

If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.

About Bee *Miracle Dog*

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Adoption Fee: $400
  • Species: Dog
  • Current Age: 9 Years 1 Month (best estimate)

Bee is a gorgeous 11 month-old girl from a reservation in SD. Bee was hit by a vehicle, one of her legs was badly fractured, and she found herself in a lot of pain, and little hope of things getting better. The vet on the reservation could do little more than amputate her leg, and only if someone stepped up to cover the cost. Luckily, Bee had a guardian angel looking over her who contacted us, hoping that we could offer Bee rescue, and hopefully save her leg. How could we say no to this super sweet, young girl? We immediately set off to go pick her up, and brought her back for evaluation and treatment at our vet. The fabulous Miracle GSD Network was instrumental in helping us rescue her and raise funds to help cover the expensive surgery required to repair her leg.

Thanks to all involved, this story has a happy ending :). Bee's surgery went great, she has recovered well, the pin has been removed from her leg, she has regained full mobility, and she has been cleared for normal activity! Bee is delighted that her crate rest is over. She is enjoying her unrestricted activity, as she loves walks and being able to run and romp around!

Bee is a beautiful girl with a shining personality to match her strinking, good looks! This is what Bee's awesome foster mom has to say about her: "Bee is about 11 mos old and loves everyone. She can come on a little strong to timid dogs and people (because she is so outgoing and bubbly!). She lives for affection and is eager to please. She loves other dogs, does well with my cat, and is good with dog-savvy children. She knows sit, down, search, heel, wait, come, and we have just started working on place. She is a gem of a dog". Bee is a great girl who will make a fabulous family pet for an active family.

Like all German Shepherd youngsters, Bee will need training, consistency, boundaries, and lots of activity and socialization, in order to become a well-balanced, well-behaved dog.
