German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.

If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.

Bear is a 2 year-old black GSD who ended up as a stray at a shelter. This poor shy, unsocialized boy was in danger, and had no hope of getting out alive without rescue. We were able to pull bear to safety in partnership with the amazing Miracle GSD Network. He is now thriving in a foster home.

Bear was living on chain, leading a sad life of isolation and neglect, prior to rescue. As a result, he has not had a lot of socialization and can be shy and timid. Bear can be painfully shy/extremely fearful around strangers. He has come a long way and he's now a lot more comfortable and relaxed, but he continues to be shy and skittish, and prefers a calm, quiet environment.  He is really enjoying being a beloved house pet in his foster home. We are confident that with gentle, patient socialization and training he will continue to improve and come out of his shell more and more.

Bear dislikes being confined in a crate, but does fine being left uncrated when his foster parents are not home
. He bonds fast and hard to one or two people (Bear's foster dad is his very favorite person) while he remains hesitant around other family members. In fact, when Bear's person leaves home with the other family members, Bear often looks for him until he finally finds a quiet spot away from the others, and lays down to wait. Bear seems to be braver when outside and not so fearful of strangers. Bear loves car rides and very often goes to work with foster dad. Bear can clear a 4 ft fence if he becomes spooked. He is looking for a home where he can be the only dog.

Bear really bonds to 1-2 people and is slow to warm up to others. Bear is looking for
a patient, nurturing forever home who will not rush him and who will allow him time to trust and adjust to his new home. Like all German Shepherds, Bear will also need structure, leadership, consistency, love, and plenty of exercise and socialization. Bear's ideal home will have some GSD experience &/or experience with fearful dogs.

Bear is a very sweet boy, and a true diamond on the rough who will reward his new family's patience with unrivaled loyalty, love and trust!
