German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.
If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.
About Gabrielle *Pre-Teen*
Status: Adopted!
Adoption Fee: $350
Species: Dog
Current Age: 8 Years 1 Month (best estimate)
Gabrielle (aka Gabby) is an approx. 8 month old, petite, solid black German Shepherd puppy. This cutie was dumped in a rural area in Oklahoma and was lucky enough to find her way into rescue.
Gabby is smart, attentive, fast, agile and loyal. She gets along well with other dogs, but really would love to be with her human(s) 24/7. She loves food and dog chews, and she does well around the house. She has just learned what toys are, and she loves them! Gabby has a strong prey drive, and wants to chase rabbits and small critters in the yard, or when she's out on walks; and like many GSD pups, she also loves to herd. However, she redirects well, and she is a smart, eager-to-please pup, who will continue to improve with consistent training. Gabby is a velcro pup who wants nothing more than to be with her people, and she loves to cuddle and be loved on.
Gabby can be a little shy at first, but warms up quickly. She would love to have a friendly dog sibling to play with in her new home. Gabby will make a fabulous addition to an active family. While she is not extremely high-drive, she is a youngster, and she will need sufficient exercise (daily walks), training, and socialization. Like all German Shepherd youngsters, Gabby will need training, consistency, boundaries, and lots of activity and socialization, in order to become a well-balanced, well-behaved dog. Gabby has not been introduced to cats or small children. Introduction to children would need to be slow.
