German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.

If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.

About Farah

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Adoption Fee: $350
  • Species: Dog
  • Current Age: 9 Years 7 Months (best estimate)

Farah is a delightful 2 year-old girl who was recently dumped at the shelter because her owner was moving and because of her severe double hip dysplasia. The shelter called us after seeing how bad her hips were, and asked if we could take her. We gladly said yes!

Farah's hips were in very bad shape. A lot of cartilage was worn away, and one hip socket was almost completely gone... Farah had a double hip surgery 5-2-17 at Sirius Vet in Omaha. Following surgery, Farah was in recovery mode for weeks, sleeping and resting most of the time, unable to stand up or walk without assistance, on pain meds for comfort, and with a poor appetite, frequently missing meals. However, therapy (including swim therapy) have helped speed up her recovery, and 6 weeks later, she is looking and feeling fantastic, and young Farah now has a wonderful life to look forward to!

Farah's recovery has gone very well, and Farah is a now happy girl who loves to play, go on walks, and follow her humans around. She runs, she is playful, and she has a very healthy appetite. She is a sweet girl who really enjoys life. She is friendly and loves all people, kids included. As much as Farah enjoys being active and going on adventures with her humans, she also enjoys her downtime, chilling in the house, cuddling, and chomping on a ball or chewtoy. She is an endearing, loyal companion, who looks at you with soulful eyes, and loves being close to her people.  She is smart and eager to please and learn new commands. Farah could get along with dogs her size with good supervision, guidance, and an experienced leader. However, she would do best in a home where she can be the only pet.

Like all German Shepherd youngsters, Farah will need training, consistency, boundaries, and lots of activity and socialization, in order to become a well-balanced, well-behaved dog.

Reminder: Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, please remember that, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings, in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills.
