German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.

Farah is a delightful 2 year-old girl who was recently dumped at the shelter because her owner was moving and because of her severe double hip dysplasia. The shelter called us after seeing how bad her hips were, and asked if we could take her. We gladly said yes! 

Farah's hips were in very bad shape. A lot of cartilage was worn away, and one hip socket was almost completely gone... Farah had a double hip surgery 5-2-17 at Sirius Vet in Omaha. Following surgery, Farah was in recovery mode for weeks, sleeping and resting most of the time, unable to stand up or walk without assistance, on pain meds for comfort, and with a poor appetite, frequently missing meals. However, therapy (including swim therapy) have helped speed up her recovery, and 6 weeks later, she is looking and feeling fantastic, and young Farah now has a wonderful life to look forward to!
