German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.

If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.

About Pandora *Puppy*

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Adoption Fee: $325
  • Species: Dog
  • Current Age: 7 Years 11 Months (best estimate)
Pandora is a super cute, 7 month-old girl who came into rescue with us last month, weighing in a mere 23 lbs. Pandora's backstory, is unfortunately a common one: a well-intentioned person found her on Craigslist four months ago, and took her in, not realizing just how much money, time, and care, a new puppy would require. Pandora came into rescue skin and bones, unvaccinated, and infested with fleas. Luckily, after a month in foster care receiving plenty of TLC and nutritious snacks, Pandora is now healthy, happy, and thriving.

Pandora is a very happy, sweet puppy! She loves to play with other dogs and she plays very well. And, while she is small, she definitely holds her own with the big dogs in her foster home! Pandora is happiest around other dogs, so we would prefer that she have a playful dog buddy, in her forever home. Pandora is great with all people she meets, kids included.  She's playful, loud, and can be pretty vocal: she likes to talk! Pandora loves all toys, especially balls. She is also a velcro pup, and follows her foster mom around everywhere, like a little shadow. Pandora does well crated when her humans are not home. She loves her food! She is is still a puppy, but she seems to be potty-trained :). She is a smart cookie and already knows sit, stay & come. Pandora is great girl!

Like all German Shepherd puppies, Pandora will need training, consistency, boundaries, and lots of activity and socialization, in order to become a well-balanced, well-behaved dog.

Reminder: Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, please remember that, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings, in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills.
