German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.
If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.
About Paris
Status: Adopted!
Adoption Fee: $275
Species: Dog
Current Age: 9 Years 3 Months (best estimate)
We recently rescued Paris, a very sweet and gorgeous girl who appears to be a German Shepherd Dog mix, from a SD reservation. Paris arrived into rescue with her six adorable puppies. The entire family was hungry, skinny, and full of parasites. The little family was very lucky to come into rescue when they did - reservation dogs lead a very hard life, with no shelter, little food, and no vet care. Many of them die on the reservation due to accidents, deprivation, and/or sickness, among other causes. Fortunately, Paris and her puppies are now safe, and they will get to experience life as beloved family pets.
Paris clearly knows she’s hit the jackpot by being rescued by HUGS, and shows it with endless love for anyone and any dog around her! Paris has done a great job with all of the other dogs she’s been introduced to in her foster home. She has a tiny bit of shyness around new people, but she warms up within a few minutes and is ready for snuggles and belly rubs! Although HUGS has no way of knowing Paris’ age, she appears to be on the young side, based on her puppy-like enthusiasm and energy level. Paris walks very well on a leash, and takes cues and direction very well. Paris would be a great running buddy for a mid-distance runner (2-3 miles), and would also thrive in a home with daily walks. Paris is always ready to be on the go! She loves to go on outings – the destination doesn’t matter, she’s just excited to be going somewhere! Paris is very smart and very food-motivated. She is a fun, delightful companion who will delight any active dog-lover. She is great with people and other dogs. Paris is an absolutely fabulous girl!
Like all German Shepherd Dogs, Australian Cattle Dogs, and other herding breed mixes that we have in rescue, Paris will need training, consistency, boundaries, and lots of activity and socialization, in order to become a well-balanced, well-behaved dog.
Reminder: Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, please remember that, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings, in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills.
