German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.
If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.
About Arwen (new name: Wennie)
Status: Adopted!
Adoption Fee: $275
Species: Dog
Current Age: 9 Years 9 Months (best estimate)
We recently rescued Arwen from a SD reservation. Arwen arrived into rescue with her two adorable puppies. The little family was very lucky to come into rescue when they did - reservation dogs lead a very hard life, with no shelter, little food, and no vet care. Many of them die on the reservation due to accidents, deprivation, and/or sickness, among other causes. Arwen and her puppies are very lucky that they were able to leave and have a chance at a better life.
Arwen is a sweet young girl who behaves well in public, and has a calm and gentle demeanor making her a great companion to take with you to dog friendly places! Arwen is fully potty-trained and has great house manners. Arwen is very smart and quickly learned the rules of the house at her foster home. She no longer needs to be crated, and she will stay off the furniture and sleep on her comfy dog bed.
Arwen is a quiet and independent dog. She rarely barks but when she does, it is at the backyard squirrels! The neighborhood squirrels fascinate her and she will truly sit for hours under the tree and watch them with anticipation. A 4 foot fence is all that is needed for Arwen and a nice big yard with a tree would make this girl the happiest dog! Outside of food and treats, Arwen’s favorite things include squirrel patrol in the yard, walks around the neighborhood and car rides. Arwen is a little shy at first but with a little time and love, she will open up once she knows she can trust you. Her favorite treats include some peanut butter in her Kong and dog treats. She has a gentle touch and takes treats ever so softly. Treat puzzles and dispenser balls are a must for this smart girl. She will quickly figure out how to get the treats out and loves a mental challenge that involves food!
While Arwen is a sweet and gentle dog, she is not a fan of lots of cuddling. Her independent nature can come across as aloof at first but she simply likes a little space especially at first. She is happy sleeping in a separate room from her foster mom and she truly enjoys getting some restful sleep, even letting out a quiet snore on occasion! Arwen is submissive with other dogs, but really likes to interact, and touch with her paws, so she would do better with other playful dogs with a similar playstyle :). Arwen also gets along with cats. She is an adorable girl!
Due to her gentle demeanor and calm nature, Arwen would make the perfect dog for a family or first time dog owner. She corrects easily and will thrive in a moderately active home that will continue her training, take her on walks, allow play time in the yard, and provide her structure with lots of love. She has shown little interest in balls or dog toys but seems to enjoy chew toys and antlers.
Arwen knows basic commands such as sit, down and off. Arwen is learning to walk nicely on a leash as she still gets distracted by all the sights, sounds and small critters. With just a little more practice she will make a great walking buddy.
Arwen will make a great companion for one very lucky family. If you are looking for a lovable companion and would like to open your home to a calm, well-mannered, sweet, and loyal dog – then Arwen is your girl.
Like all German Shepherd Dogs, Australian Cattle Dogs, and other herding breed mixes that we have in rescue, Arwen will need training, consistency, boundaries, and lots of activity and socialization, in order to become a well-balanced, well-behaved dog.
Reminder: Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, please remember that, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings, in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills.
