German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.
If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.
About Ashlynn
Status: Adopted!
Adoption Fee: $400
Species: Dog
Current Size: 17 Pounds
Current Age: 7 Years 6 Months (best estimate)
Ashlynn is an utterly sweet, lovable and adorable, young blue merle mini-Aussie. Ashlyn is very sweet and loves to cuddle. She also enjoys the company of other dogs and plays nicely. In fact, she loves going to doggy daycare often (and everyone who's met her loves her back!).
Ashlynn is a very happy, active little girl! She is adorable and very playful and fun. She loves to play all the time, with other dogs, and even by herself with her toys! She loves toys that squeak and that she can carry around. She loves spending time outside in the backyard with her humans and the other dogs. Ashlynn is potty-trained. She walks well on a leash, but she is working on not pulling when people, dogs and bikers go by. She needs good structure and leadership, as she tends to get a little bossy/territorial whenever visitors come over at the house. But she is very smart and trainable. Ashynn loves to go for long walks, outings, and car rides. And we find this hilarious, but she also likes to watch TV! She is lots of fun, and has tons of adorable sass and personality. Above all, Ashlynn loves being the center of attention and your lap will always be warm with her around!
Ashlynn weighs all of 17lbs, but do not let her tiny size deceive you! While Ashlynn is adorably small-sized, at the end of the day, she's still an energetic, feisty little beauty, and a herding breed dog. She currently goes for 3 mile walks every day, she plays constantly, and she frequently goes to doggy daycare to burn off excess energy! She will require just as much exercise, activity, and training as her larger counterparts. Like any of our dogs, this sweetie will make a great addition to an active home that will pamper her, but that will also work with her, as herding breeds (including mini Aussies) are smart dogs who need structure, good leadership, lots of activity and mental stimulation. Ashlynn will need daily walks in addition to backyard playtime, outings for socialization, and the usual training that youngsters require. Because of that, Ashlynn's ideal owner will have prior Aussie (or other herding breed) experience.
Ashlynn's adoption fee is $400, all of which goes back into offseting our high-cost vetting expenses and rescuing more dogs. Adoption fees include spay/neuter, current on age-appropriate vaccinations, fecal, deworming, flea/tick and heartworm preventative, heartworm tested if old enough (treated if positive), and microchipped. Please visit http://heartlandgsrescue.rescuegroups.org/info/adoption for more information about our adoption process and requirements, and to apply.
