German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.
If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.
About Evan *Amina/Evan/Guthrie Litter*New name: Luke
Status: Adopted!
Adoption Fee: $375
Species: Dog
Current Age: 6 Years 10 Months (best estimate)
Handsome little Evan, and his siblings Amina and Guthrie, were rescued from a reservation in SD. Life on the reservation is always tough for the many stray dogs that live there, but summer is especially hard. Along with the usual lack of shelter, food/water or medical care, the oppressive heat, and tick/flea season make summer conditions unbearable for the many dogs that are trying to fend for themselves on the Rez. Evan is among one of the very lucky pups that he was able to leave that life behind, when he was rescued. Now all he needs is a furever home!
Evan is an active and playful 3 month-old pup, who is gentle and friendly. He enjoys outside time with his humans, and he is especially fond of his tug and chew toys. He loves to wrestle and play with the other dogs in his foster home, and then take naps afterwards! In fact, he loves to cuddle with the other dogs and use them as pillows when he naps. He is absolutely adorable! Evan is sweet and affectionate, and gets along well with everyone. He is working on potty-training and crate-training and is doing very well at both. Evan is a super fun, smart, lovable little guy who would fit in just about any active pack!
Evan is a great puppy who is looking for an active adopter who will be able to provide daily walks in addition to backyard playtime, outings for socialization, and the usual training (positive reinforcement training) that puppies and youngsters require.
Evan's adoption fee is $375, all of which goes back into offseting our high-cost vetting expenses and rescuing more dogs. We are a 100% volunteer-run rescue group and rely on adoption fees and donations to continue saving lives. Adoption fees include spay/neuter, current on age-appropriate vaccinations, fecal, deworming, flea/tick and heartworm preventative, heartworm tested if old enough (and treated if positive), and microchipped. Please visit http://heartlandgsrescue.rescuegroups.org/info/adoption for more information about our adoption process and requirements, and to apply.
Evan appears to be an Australian Cattle Dog (aka Heeler) mix. Like all German Shepherd Dogs, Border Collies, Australian Cattle Dogs, and other herding breed mixes that we have in rescue, Evan will need training consistency, boundaries, and plenty of activity and socialization.Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, please remember that you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings, in order to work on his leash skills, manners, and social skills. Our breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.
