German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.

If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.

About Carly *Carly/Jetta/Sheldon Litter*.New name: Scout

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Adoption Fee: $375
  • Species: Dog
  • Current Age: 6 Years 8 Months (best estimate)
Carly and her siblings were rescued from a reservation in SD. Life on the reservation is tough for the many stray dogs that live there, but summer is especially hard. Along with the usual lack of shelter, food/water or medical care, the oppressive heat, and tick/flea season make summer conditions unbearable for the many dogs that are trying to fend for themselves on the Rez. Carly is very lucky that she was able to leave that life behind when she was rescued. She is now ready for her furever home, and she will make a wonderful family pet for a very lucky adopter.

Carly is an awesome girl who is fairly calm for a puppy. She loves following around the other dogs in her foster home and can often be found sleeping under the kitchen table where it is cool! Carly is a great puppy that is fairly confident and independent, and not at all clingy. Carly is super playful and can hold her own with the bigger dogs in her foster home whether it comes to play-wrestling or playing tug-o-war. She really enjoys chews and playing with squeaky toys. Carly does great with people, kids, and dogs. She has met a kitty and did well with the cat too! Carly is working on potty-training and has been getting increasingly better! She sleeps with her fosters at night and gets up typically twice to let them know she needs to be let out. Carly is working on crate-training, and while she is not a fan of the crate, she does ok in it :). We would like for Carly to have a dog buddy in her adoptive home. While she enjoys being around her humans, she truly blooms in the company of other dogs.

Carly is a fabulous puppy who will thrive with an active adopter who will provide daily walks in addition to backyard playtime, outings for socialization, and the usual training (positive reinforcement training) that puppies and youngsters require.

Carly's adoption fee is $375, all of which goes back into offseting our high-cost vetting expenses and rescuing more dogs.  We are a 100% volunteer-run rescue group and rely on adoption fees and donations to continue saving lives. Adoption fees include spay/neuter, current on age-appropriate vaccinations, fecal, deworming, flea/tick and heartworm preventative, heartworm tested if old enough (and treated if positive), and microchipped. Please visit http://heartlandgsrescue.rescuegroups.org/info/adoption for more information about our adoption process and requirements, and to apply.

Like all German Shepherd Dogs, mixes, and other herding breed mixes that we have in rescue, Carly will need training consistency, boundaries, and plenty of activity and socialization. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, please remember that you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings, in order to work on his leash skills, manners, and social skills. Our breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.
