German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.
If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.
About Beckett
Status: Adopted!
Adoption Fee: $325
Species: Dog
Current Size: 55 Pounds
Current Age: 6 Years 10 Months (best estimate)
Beckett is an adorable young boy who has been thriving in foster care. When he arrived with his brother Caesar, both of them were so neglected and starved, that at 9 months old, they only weighed around 38 lbs each. They were full of ticks, infested with hookworms, anemic, and extremely emaciated. These poor boys had even given up, and did not even want to eat any more. Thanks to proper vet care, good food, and love, that is all in the past! Both of them are strong, happy, and healthy, and is ready for (separate) furever homes! Both of them are exceptionally sweet and wonderfully laid-back. Beckett has the more traditional GSD black & tan markings, while Caeasar has a brindle coat, like a Dutch Shepherd.
Beckett is very sweet and laid back for a puppy. He loves to play but he also loves to chill and relax. He’s definitely a snuggler! He’s potty trained and crate trained. He rides well in the car. Beckett didn't have a lot of exposure to the outside world before rescue, and still gets a little scared by cars driving by on walks, but he's quickly learning and becoming more comfortable with it all. Beckett is great with people (including kids) and other dogs, and so sweet and well-behaved in public. He loves playing with toys, especially rope toys, and Kongs that have treats inside. He has a wonderful personality and he will make an enviable addition to the very lucky home that adopts him. He is an amazing puppy!
Beckett's adoption fee is $325, all of which goes back into offseting our high-cost vetting expenses and rescuing more dogs. Adoption fees include spay/neuter, current on age-appropriate vaccinations, fecal, deworming, flea/tick and heartworm preventative, heartworm tested if old enough (treated if positive), and microchipped.
