Login to Remember your Favorite Animals and Breeds!

German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.

If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.

About Freya

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Adoption Fee: $350
  • Species: Dog
  • Color: Black
  • Current Age: 8 Years 11 Months (best estimate)

Freya is a beautiful, very sweet black young German Shepherd girl, who came to us badly injured after being hit by a vehicle. She was surrendered to an urgent care clinic by an owner who could not afford the care needed, and the faced euthanasia. The damage was extensive, as she had complex fractures to her hip and leg bones.

Many of you have followed Freya's story and donated towards her care, and we are so thankful! After surgery, many months of follow-up care, lots of TLC in her foster home, months of restricted activity, followed by rehab exercises. Freya was in really bad shape and required complex surgery to her hip, and on her badly fractured leg. Due to the extent of her injuries, recovery has been long and slow. But she is getting there! Her hip fracture is now fully healed. At her latest checkup this week, Freya's x-ray revealed that her tibia fracture is 90-95% healed! Freya still has a little bit of lameness that is visible when she walks, and that might never go away. However, she's defied death, and thanks to the amazing surgeons at Sirius Veterinary Orthopedic Center, she's able to walk and run again, she has no pain, and she's going to be able to live a full, happy, very active life! She can run, jump, go up and down stairs without any difficulties at all. Her previous injuries do not slow her down at all!

Freya is a very sweet girl who is affectionate, sweet, and who enjoys being with her humans! She gets carsick (a little bit of dramamine before car trips does the trick!) but loves going places. She loves going for walks and is well behaved. She is gentle, sensitive, friendly, and social, and likes to be petted and to hang out with her humans as much as she can. She gets along with other dogs with proper introductions. She's a very sweet girl, with a wonderful temperament and personality!

Freya' adoption fee is $350, all of which goes back into offsetting our high-cost vetting expenses and rescuing more dogs.  Adoption fees include spay/neuter, current on age-appropriate vaccinations, fecal, deworming, flea/tick and heartworm preventative, heartworm tested if old enough (treated if positive), and microchipped. Please visit http://heartlandgsrescue.rescuegroups.org/info/adoption for more information about our adoption process and requirements, and to apply.
