Sandy needs a caretaker or foster! Won't you consider helping her get a new start?

German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.

If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.

About Sandy

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Adoption Fee: $275
  • Species: Dog
  • Color: Blue Merle
  • Current Size: 56 Pounds
  • Current Age: 11 Years (best estimate)

Sandy is a sweet, lovable, fun blue merle Aussie who is smart, active, and beautiful. She loves getting attention from her humans. And she likes playing with other dogs after proper introductions and enjoys doggy daycare. Sandy just turned 6 years old. She likes to go for walks, and even though she does not like getting her paws wet when it rains, she absolutely LOVES the snow! She is crate-trained and potty-trained, and she rides well in the car. Sandy is a loyal companion who is happy to be on the go, but she will also lay down and relax in the house next to you.

Sandy would do well with another mellow dog her size -she is sweet and playful, but prefers other dogs not to be in her face when she's had enough-. She could also be quite happy as an only dog. There were young kids in her previous home and there wasn't a lot of proactive supervision. As a result, Sandy still really likes kids, but she is now a little more selective and cautious, and now likes her kids respectful and well-behaved ;) .  Sandy is a gorgeous, happy, fluffy girl who will brighten your life, should you chose to share it with her!

Like any of our dogs, this sweetie would make a great addition to an active home that will provide the love, structure, good leadership, activity and mental stimulation that her breed needs. Because of that, Sandy's ideal owner will have prior Aussie, GSD, or other herding breed experience. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, please remember that you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings, in order to provide sufficient stimulation, ward off boredom, and work on leash skills, and manners.

Sandy's adoption fee is $275, all of which goes back into offseting our high-cost vetting expenses and rescuing more dogs. Adoption fees include spay/neuter, current on age-appropriate vaccinations, fecal, deworming, flea/tick and heartworm preventative, heartworm tested if old enough (treated if positive), and microchipped. Please visit http://heartlandgsrescue.rescuegroups.org/info/adoption for more information about our adoption process and requirements, and to apply.
