German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.

If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.

About Neryssa (nka Stella) - Spring Litter

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Adoption Fee: $425
  • Species: Dog
  • Current Age: 2 Years 10 Months (best estimate)
The Spring Litter is looking for furever homes! Momma was a German Shepherd, so they are 50% GSD, 100% cute! These kids are very sweet, active, smart, playful and sociable. They are lucky little fighters too, as they fought Parvo and lived to tell the tale!

"Hello, my name is Neryssa, and I landed on earth, just 3.5 months ago! It's a very exciting place to be. So many smells, sounds, sights, tastes, and places to explore are making me very happy! I love to play with all the household dogs and foster mom. We run, and jump, and climb. I am a natural retriever, so playing ball is one of my favorite games. i am very intelligent and learn very quickly.

My dog Momma was a big German Shepherd lady, and my daddy was a traveling salesman. I have big feet, big ears, and a big heart, like my momma. I have a pretty coat with many colors, thanks to dad. I am very gentle and cuddly. I love to be held. My foster mom says I am not very nippy at all, as far as Shepherd puppies go! My favorite toys are food puzzles.

Foster mom says I'm potty-training very quickly. I almost never potty in my crate and always poop outside. I sleep in my crate at night with my cuddly toys, blankets, and chewies. I have a sweet temperament and I'm gentle. I learn quickly with food rewards and lots of praise. I'm looking for a forever home to love and play with me for the next 14 years or so! I want to grow up with lots of love, and have adventures with my forever family"

Like any of our dogs, this beautiful puppy would make a great addition to an active home that will provide the love, structure, good leadership, activity and mental stimulation that her breed needs. Because of that, Neryssa's ideal owner will have prior GSD or other herding breed experience, and a friendly dog buddy for Neryssa. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, please remember that you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings, in order to provide sufficient stimulation, ward off boredom, and work on leash skills, and manners.

Neryssa's adoption fee is $425, all of which goes back into offseting our high-cost vetting expenses and rescuing more dogs.  We are a 100% volunteer-run rescue group and rely on adoption fees and donations to continue saving lives. Adoption fees include spay/neuter, current on age-appropriate vaccinations, fecal, deworming, flea/tick and heartworm preventative, heartworm tested if old enough (and treated if positive), and microchipped. Please visit http://heartlandgsrescue.rescuegroups.org/info/adoption for more information about our adoption process and requirements, and to apply.
