German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.
If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.
About Latte (nka River)
Status: Adopted!
Adoption Fee: $395
Species: Dog
Current Age: 2 Years 7 Months (best estimate)
Latte, Mocha, and Toffee, are three adorable mix puppies (GSD mom and Belgian Malinois dad). These adorable babies were dumped in a TX alley, when their former owners couldn't sell them . In typical Shepherd/Mal fashion, they immediately expressed their outrage in a very vocal manner! Undoubtedly, they would have ended up at the nearest kill shelter, or in a worse pickle, if not for a kind soul who immediately got them out of harms' way and sought help.
Hi my name is Latte! You can tell by my coloring that I'm a little bit hot coffee and a lot milky smooth cuddler. I'm 4-months old. I love to play and party hard with my foster siblings. One of my favorite things to do is splash in the paddling pool. And sometimes my water dish if the pool no isn't filled properly. I am crate trained and potty trained. I ride well in my crate in the car. I'm learning how to do all kinds of fun things like sit, down, stay, and some puppy agility. I love to jump. I can already jump over a 3 ft baby gate! My foster mom thinks that I will definitely need a 6 ft fence when I am older so that I don't escape. I am very energetic and extremely athletic, so I will need a home that will keep me busy all the time. When I get a little bit older, I will need several long daily walks or runs. Like other dogs of my breed, I need slow introductions to new dogs, although I'm really good with new people. I am very clever and a fast learner. My forever home will want to take me to a series of dog training classes so that I learn how to walk nicely on a lead, and get along with people and dogs properly. After that, I would love things like Agility, Tricks , and any other type of active dog sports. My forever home should be aware that I'm very smart and I will be a strong pup. It is important that I have a solid obedience foundation before I get much bigger! I would do best in a home that has previous experience with herding dogs, especially Malinois and German Shepherds.
Like any of our dogs, this beautiful girl would make a great addition to an active home that will provide the love, structure, good leadership, activity and mental stimulation that his breed needs. Because of that, Latte's ideal owner will have prior GSD, Malinois or other herding breed experience, and a friendly dog buddy for Latte. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, please remember that you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings, in order to provide sufficient stimulation, ward off boredom, and work on leash skills, and manners.
Latte's adoption fee is $395, all of which goes back into offseting our high-cost vetting expenses and rescuing more dogs. We are a 100% volunteer-run rescue group and rely on adoption fees and donations to continue saving lives. Adoption fees include spay/neuter, current on age-appropriate vaccinations, fecal, deworming, flea/tick and heartworm preventative, heartworm tested if old enough (and treated if positive), and microchipped. Please visit http://heartlandgsrescue.rescuegroups.org/info/adoption for more information about our adoption process and requirements, and to apply.
Please review the information in the "About Us", "Important Considerations" and "Adopt" sections on our website menu, as it contains useful information about the breed, adoption fees, the adoption process and our requirements, and how meeting the dogs works.
