German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.
If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.
About Kimmy Sue (nka Roxy)
Status: Adopted!
Adoption Fee: $350
Species: Dog
Current Size: 65 Pounds
Current Age: 5 Years 5 Months (best estimate)
Kimberly Sue is a beautiful, incredibly sweet girl that we rescued from a puppy mill, with a group of 3 other German Shepherds. Kimmy Sue is a gentle, lovely girl, that is initially shy, but once she warms up, she has an adorable playful side! This sweetheart has an amazing temperament and is the whole package!
Kimmy Sue is so sweet and is so grateful to be out of that puppy mill! After living the first 3 years of her life in that awful place being bred non-stop, with no affection, basic commodities or vet care, she is now soaking up all the love and comforts of her foster home! Kimmy Sue is the most wonderful, sweet girl, gently girl, and she has a great temperament. Kimmy Sue is great with other dogs, fine with cats, and is a well-behaved, sweet dog, that is a delight to have around. One of Kimmy's ears is missing the tip due flystrike (she was kept outdoors the first part of her life). Our sweetheart is learning all about what being an indoor family pet is, and she loves it! She has discovered toys and what to do with them; treats...these are pretty good; gardening with foster mom (and playing with the water hose) and she is finding that these are all great fun! She kennels well with a little coaxing and is quiet through the night. Kimmy Sue settles down nicely and would be a great work-from-home buddy as she is very low-key! She was quickly potty-trained and recently learned that she loves to go on walks. She walks well on a leash, she is very curious about this new world around her, and is gaining a little more confidence each day.
Like any of our dogs, this sweet, beautiful girl would make a great addition to an active home that will provide the love, structure, good leadership, activity and mental stimulation that this breed needs. Because of that, Kimmy Sue's ideal owner will have prior GSD or other herding breed experience, and a friendly dog buddy for her. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, please remember that you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings, in order to provide sufficient stimulation, ward off boredom, and work on leash skills, and manners.
Kimmy Sue's adoption fee is $350, all of which goes back into offseting our high-cost vetting expenses and rescuing more dogs. We are a 100% volunteer-run rescue group and rely on adoption fees and donations to continue saving lives. Adoption fees include spay/neuter, current on age-appropriate vaccinations, fecal, deworming, flea/tick and heartworm preventative, heartworm tested if old enough (and treated if positive), and microchipped. Please visit http://heartlandgsrescue.rescuegroups.org/info/adoption for more information about our adoption process and requirements, and to apply.
