German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.

If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.

Layla is a shy, petite and very gorgeous, German Shepherd girl. Layla just turned 7 years old, but don't let that deceive you! This girl, who comes from working lines, has lots of energy, and is very physically fit and athletic. Layla will play, walk & run with you to your heart's content! Layla found herself homeless in Missouri after her owner died in an accident. Up until that time, Layla had been living an isolated life as an outdoor dog, with very limited human interaction.

Layla is used to being around dogs and gets along fine with other dogs. However, prior to coming to HUGS she had not been socialized around people and she knew nothing of the outside world. When Layla arrived at HUGS, she was semi-feral and wouldn't allow anyone to come within 8-10 feet of her. Layla is progressing wonderfully in an experienced foster home, with a patient, loving HUGS foster parent. It took Layla a week to start trusting her foster parent, but she now seeks and allows petting, she likes to rest her head lovingly on her foster parent's lap as she naps, and she loves playing with her doggie foster siblings.

Layla is now showing her fun, playful side more and more every day! Layla continues to do better every day as she gains confidence, trust, and becomes more comfortable with her surroundings. Layla now truly enjoys going on outings, attending our adoption events, and she enjoys attention, yummy treats and gentle petting from strangers, as long as she is approached gently.

Layla will need a patient forever pet parent who will not rush her, and who will allow her time to adjust to her new home. Layla will reward her new pet parent's patience with unrivaled loyalty, love and trust! If you are looking for a dog past the crazy puppy stage, but with plenty of energy and many good years ahead of her, Layla is your girl!
