German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.
If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.

Loki is a dark and handsome 4 year-old German Shepherd male who came to Heartland German Shepherd Rescue (HUGS) from a high-kill shelter in California.
Loki is a very sweet, friendly and social boy who loves people and gets along great with other dogs. This boy is a bit of an escape artist and he will require a watchful owner with a 6ft fence. Loki is otherwise the perfect dog: easy-going, sweet and very loving! Loki loves to be hugged and gives sweet kisses. This handsome Casanova is not terribly good with cats. We recommend a cat-free home for Loki, unless his new pet parents are very patient, experienced canine leaders who will consistently work with him and teach him to respect his feline siblings.
When Loki arrived to HUGS we noticed a slight limp on one of his legs. Our vet examined him and diagnosed him with a degenerative joint process on the affected leg. Loki is otherwise very healthy, except that he needs to keep kit and trim, and avoid extra stress on that leg. Nice walks and wimming are fine. But he needs to avoid strenuous activity involving sudden twists and turns, which could result in his joint ligament being torn. If that were to happen, Loki's ligament could require surgical repair. Loki currently takes Dasuquin Advanced joint supplements to help slow down the disease process. He also needs to avoid activities such as chasing freesbies or fetching balls (which could further damage his leg), in favor or walks and swims (which help strengthen his leg and lessen the chance that he may need surgery).
Loki is a stunningly gorgeous, extremely sweet and friendly boy who is sure to quickly steal his new pet parent's heart!
