German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.
If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.

Kala is a 4-5 year-old small-sized, adorable German Shepherd female, who was surrendered to us by a Missouri breeder because she was going after her chickens. Well, that is not surprising, as this poor sweetheart was truly skin and bones when we first picked her up. Kala must have been hard-pressed to do what was necessary to survive. Kala was clearly unsocialized around people and was very shy and fearful. Kala has been improving in her foster home, becoming more confident and comfortable around people. Kala is sweet but shy, gorgeously petite, and very gentle and docile. She rides nicely in the car, is crate-trained, and she is great with other dogs. And we have been told that she doesn't bother cats, although we haven't had the chance to observe that ourselves. Kala is gaining weight, learning to walk on a leash, and beginning to enjoy the comforts of life as a pampered house pet. Kala is a small-sized German Shepherd girl, with striking, very expressive eyes that will melt your heart. She is a true gem that will delight the pet parent who adopts her! Kala seems to finds comfort in the company of other dogs, so although not required for the right family, a doggie buddy is preferred.
