German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.

If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.

About Nemo

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Adoption Fee: $350
  • Species: Dog
  • Current Age: 11 Years 1 Month (best estimate)
  • Location: Omaha, NE
We rescued Nemo from a shelter where he ended up in trouble after his family dumped him when they moved. He had been an outdoor dog, he was missing the fur on his ear tips from fly-strike, he was very thin, and had no prior training or socialization.

Nemo is extremely smart and eager to please, and he quickly learned the basics. He now walks & runs great on a leash. He down-stays & waits to be released to eat his food although he LOOOVES his food :)
. He is a super smart, fun, affectionate boy who loves water, playing with toys, giving kisses and being petted. He's a typical high energy youngster but exceptionally sweet, eager to please, and good in the house.

Nim is not good with strange dogs, however, with the right owner willing to take things slow (over several weeks) he can be integrated into a pack and he is quite good with other dogs once he knows them! Nemo would also do great as an only dog.

Nemo is very sweet! He loves to give kisses, likes men and women. Nemo would be extremely easy to introduce as the only dog in the house, but he will adapt to living with other dogs under an experienced, patient owner who is willing to crate-rotate and do very slow dog introductions over weeks. No cats.

This sweet, handsome, very lovable boy would be a great dog for an active owner who will take him on long walks or jogs, and who will stimulate and tire this young pup! Nemo has plenty of energy but also knows how to relax inside the house. He is a very friendly and loving dog who likes nothing more than to spend time with his humans.

Nemo is an exceptionally friendly boy who is great with people of all ages. However, because of his high-drive and dislike of strange dogs, we are requiring an experienced owner and a yard with a 6-foot privacy fence for Nemo.
