German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.

If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.

About Izzy

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Adoption Fee: $350
  • Species: Dog
  • Current Age: 11 Years 2 Months (best estimate)
  • Location: Omaha, NE

Izzy is an approximately 2 y.o. girl who came from a tiny rural shelter in Arkansas. We drove down there to pick up another girl, Kintsugi. And came across Izzy, a 2 y.o. GSD girl at the same pound, also skin and bones, also Heartworm Positive and  equally desperate for rescue! We were very full, but this girl seemed to know that her life depended on it... Izzy worked her charm and wooed one of our volunteer transporters until she had no choice but to give in, and she agreed to foster her so that we could bring her into rescue ;).

Izzy was deteriorating quickly in the shelter. She was skin and bones,
h er coat was dull and in terrible shape, she was extremely stressed out. The shelter did not have the resources to make her better, and having been labeled as unadoptable, Izzy was in big danger.

Izzy is now in a wonderful foster home where she is learning to properly interact with other dogs, and where she is putting on weight, learning basic commands, and thriving under all the attention, good care & TLC. Izzy is a very sweet loving girl. She is an active young pup who will need plenty of walks and exercise. She is excellent with people and kids. And she would do best as the only dog in the house.

Izzy came to us Heartworm Positive. She has received Heartworm treatment. She recently completed 30 days of crate rest. She still needs one more treatment and some additional follow-up (which will be scheduled and paid for by HUGS), but she is now available for adoption.
