German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.
If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.
About Ariel
Status: Adopted!
Adoption Fee: $350
Species: Dog
Current Age: 10 Years 11 Months (best estimate)
Location: Omaha, NE
Ariel is an absolutely gorgeous 2 y.o. girl, sweet German Shepherd girl. We rescued Ariel from a kill shelter thanks to the amazing Miracle GSD network. Ariel is a very bright girl who is friendly to people and very slightly on the shy side. She wants to be close and follow you everywhere, and she prefers that you go outside with her on potty breaks :). Ariel has good house manners: she doesn't get into things and does not seem to be a chewer. Ariel walks well on a leash; she does well with moderate to average exercise; and she knows how to relax in the house.
Ariel is good with people, including with kids. Ariel is not good with small dogs or cats. She can get along with dogs her size with good supervision, guidance, and an experienced leader. But she would do best in a home where she can be the only pet.
Ariel loves spending time with her humans! She is a cutie who likes to sit as close as she can in front of you and stare deeply into your eyes. She's a sweet, soulful girl! She doesn't play a lot with toys, but she likes to carry a toy around in her mouth. And she loves car rides!
