German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.

If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.

About Juno

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Adoption Fee: $275
  • Species: Dog
  • Current Age: 9 Years 6 Months (best estimate)

Juno is a gorgeous, very sweet, young girl who up until rescue lived as a stray on the reservation. Reservation dogs lead a very hard life with no shelter, little food, and no vet care. Many of them die young due to accidents, deprivation, and/or sickness among other causes.

Juno and her 7 pups were found this summer on a SD reservation, hungry, thirsty, and crusty with mange. Juno was so emaciated that she was literally skin and bones.

Juno is a very sweet and lovable girl. She is a puppy herself and has lots of energy and enthusiasm. She is gentle, but high-energy, loving, agile, and gives the best kisses and cuddles. Juno is thriving in her foster home, and she is becoming truly stunning, now that her coat has recgained its health and shine, and now that she has gained a healthy weight.

Juno is very affectionate, loving, and cheerful. She loves life and she shows it with every smile and tail-wag. She is fabulous with the dogs in her foster home. She is great with people, and with older kids who are not at risk of being bowled over as she zooms about in gleeful enthusiasm! Juno adores walks, runs, and does not mind playing dress up! She is a consumate fashionista who looks amazing in tutus and scarves ;).

Juno will need a very active family that will provide plenty of activity, exercise, training and socialization that every active youngster needs. Juno would make an excellent agility or jogging partner. She needs a moderately experienced owner, as she can be a little reactive when she comes across new dogs. But she is absolutely loving and great with other dogs with slow introductions. Juno will make a wonderful, loving, loyal pet for a very lucky adopter.

Please review the information in the "About Us", "Important Considerations" and "Adopt" sections on our website menu, as it contains useful information about the breed, adoption fees, the adoption process and our requirements, and how meeting the dogs works.
